The check in staff were lovely and explained everything clearly, the room was ok other than the bedside light not working and the towel rail was hanging off.

The chap on shift in the evening when we checked in was excellently helpful. It was a very hot night, so upon request he very quickly arranged for 2 fans for the room.
At breakfast, everything was neatly laid out, and anything that wasn't full was quickly topped up once we informed the staff.
Beds were comfortable, shower was fine
The only downside to the property is that it has a stale smell of smoke in the rooms (it's an old building, so the smoke is probably engrained in the brickwork)
A note for the Hotel staff: If you get an air mist humidifier and leave it active for a few days, it will reduce the musty smoke smell.

Friendly but dated
The building is a bit dated and could do with a cosmetic refresh, but it has all the facilities you will need.
The food is good value and freshly prepared on site. The bar is comfortable and the service throughout is friendly but unobtrusive.

Second stay here and probably the last....
Not good value for money over £400 for 4 nights b&b for accommodation that was of a lower standard than the budget chains

Really!
Hotel is looking tired. Night porter decided it would be a good idea to play music as he worked, this was at 3am!

To be honest everything was no where close to my expectations. I have slept in some nice places before. I will be more careful when booking next time.

Value for money compared to others in Newark
The hotel was welcoming and it had been refreshed since my last visit. The room was clean and the food, both breakfast and evening meal was wholesome and value for money (although there was no marmalade at breakfast)! I couldn't get the required programmes to work on the TV but this didn't matter because I had my laptop. Overall, the hotel is value for money and I would recommend it.

Arriving from overseas on day and called ahead to request early check-in. Was declined. Eventually got into room 45 minutes before check-in officially opened. Overall the place had a grubby (seen better days) feel to it. Staff was friendly and location suited my purpose for two nights

My supposed double room was tiny with only two feet of space around the bed and the decor was very tired and in need of an update.

Bad experience
Very poor hotel. University dormitory I was leaving in 20 years ago was about the same standard with the difference that it was £90 for a month, not for a day. Very noisy, flushing toilet waking you at 5am, I could hear phone ringing in the reception. Room number 2 is about 6sq meters. It is claustrophobic. I consider staying in this hotel as one of the life experience that changes you forever. Luckily I was there for two nights. Never again!

Helpful staff. Tired building.
The reviews for this hotel are mixed. The negative ones give a fair description of what to expect. On a positive note a lot of the staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel itself is tired and the room we were in, 40, definitely in need of an update. It is not a place to stay if you are sensitive to smell. We asked if there was a ground floor room. Our double was small with the bed against the wall. The shower was lukewarm. It was not a comfortable stay. Finally, at check out, I was asked to pay for the room. They could not find a record of my payment through Hotels.com! It was eventually resolved.

Never again
Oh dear. So outdated and the entire decor is old and tired. Grey net curtains and the Carpet needs a good clean!. We had a built in cupboard for a wardrobe which smelt damp so didnt use it. Big bathroom with an old corner shower cubicle with a manky old shower attachment. On arrival the first words spoken to me were "Name?" So i said hello!!. Breakfast was on preorder and unpleasant. Watery poached egg, burnt fried eggs. Overcooked beans. The most herby sausage ever with the most oniony hash brown ever so too many flavors on one plate. Whole place needs a complete makeover.

One of the poorest hotels I have ever stayed in.
Turning up at the hotel is not a very welcoming site. There is a derelict building next door. I had to park my car around the back of this - my first question to the receptionist was "Is my car safe there?". She replied positively. Entering the hotel you are met with a 70's time warp feeling and a smell of old cooking oil. There is also just a stale smell - nothing smelt fresh. It is dark, dingy and could do with a coat of new pain throughout. The stale smell continued to the block that my room was in and indead to my room. The pictures attached are of my room - stains on the bed linen, carpets and gruby shower.
I ordered fish and ships for my dinner. One taste of the fish and I knew that it was not fresh - it was definitly on the turn. I pointed this out to a lady, who said that the batter was a beer batter. No offer of alternative food or that I would not be charged for the food. You have to order your breakfast the night before. I went for the full breakfast. I was concerned because of my experience with the fish. The breakfast was delivered to my table by a man that had serious body odour issues (I smelt it the previouis night on him). It didn't help that he had his thumb squeezed on to my black pudding. So the BO and the thump inprint turned me off my food. As expected when I checked out my dinner the night before was on my bill. I queried this and it was taken off. I showed the receptionist the pictures and she took my email address and said she would show the manager.
